“Zamzam water is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.”
Narrated by Aḥmad (no. 14849), Ibn Mājah (no. 3062), and Ibn Abī Shaybah (no. 14137), from the narration of Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Authenticated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ (no. 5502), and Ṣaḥīḥ at-Targhīb wa at-Tarhīb (no. 1165).
Brief Explanation of the Hadith
Zamzam is a well located within al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, near the noble Kaʿbah. Its water is blessed — the best water on the face of the earth. Among the blessings of Zamzam water is that it serves the purpose for which it is consumed — whether related to matters of this world or the Hereafter. For Allah has made it suitable for fulfilling all needs, as indicated by the Prophet’s statement: “for whatever it is drunk for.” The particle “mā” (whatever) denotes comprehensiveness.
It thus includes everything the drinker intends—whether to repel harm or attain benefit—provided the intention is sincere and grounded in belief in the truthfulness of the Prophet’s words. Whoever drinks it seeking healing, Allah heals him; seeking protection, Allah protects him; for nourishment or quenching, Allah satisfies him. And whoever drinks it for the sake of seeking knowledge and for memorization will become a preserver (of knowledge) among the people of knowledge. And whoever drinks it for a need will attain it, even if he intends multiple matters with a single drink. There is no difference whether Zamzam is drunk in Mecca or elsewhere—it brings about the intended benefit by Allah’s permission. The righteous and scholars have experienced its effectiveness for fulfilling needs related to this world and the Hereafter. It is recommended, when drinking it, to drink one’s fill (i.e., to drink abundantly), and to supplicate to Allah with whatever lawful (Shar‘i) supplications one wishes.
The ḥadīth highlights the virtue, status, and great significance of Zamzam water.
