Authenticated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ (nos. 6470, 6471) and Ṣaḥīḥ at-Targhīb wa at-Tarhīb (nos. 736, 1473).

Brief Explanation of the Hadith

Reciting the Qur’ān holds immense virtue, and certain sūrahs have been singled out for additional merit. Among them is Sūrat al-Kahf, one of the Meccan sūrahs. It was named al-Kahf (The Cave) due to the mention of the Companions of the Cave at its beginning. Several ḥadīths have been reported regarding the virtue of this sūrah, including this one. It states that whoever recites it—male or female, young or old—on Friday (i.e., between sunrise and sunset of that day), or on its night according to the view of Imām al-Shāfiʿī (may Allah have mercy on him), will receive a great reward: a light will be granted to them that will extend from one Friday to the next.
It is a spiritual light that Allah casts into the person’s heart, sight, insight, or entire being—guiding them to what is right and protecting them from sin. It may also be a tangible, visible light, manifesting on the face as radiance, brightness, and beauty. This is in this worldly life.
That light also ascends with the person's deeds to the heavens, illuminates their grave, and shines for them on the Day of Resurrection amid the great gathering. This pertains to the Hereafter. Moreover, the effect and reward of this sūrah continue to benefit the person throughout the entire week—hence the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A light will shine for him between the two Fridays."
For that immense reward to be attained, the recitation must involve uttering the verses aloud. At minimum, one should move their lips and hear themselves. It is highly recommended that one's heart is present during the recitation, pondering its meanings, and seeking guidance from its directives. Merely listening to the Sūrah's recitation is not sufficient as a substitute for actively reciting it.
