“Whoever among the young performs Hajj and then reaches the age of full responsibility, he must perform another Hajj. Whoever among the Bedouins performs Hajj and then migrates (embraces Islam), he must perform another Hajj. And whoever is a slave and performs Hajj and then is freed, he must perform another Hajj.”

Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsat (no. 2731, the wording is his), al-Bayhaqī in al-Kubrā (no. 9849), and al-Ḍiyā’ in al-Mukhtārah (no. 537), from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Authenticated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ (no. 2729) and Irwā’ al-Ghalīl (no. 986).

Brief Explanation of the Hadith

Hajj is an obligatory duty for every capable Muslim and is one of the pillars of Islam. The 'Hajj of Islam' (the obligatory pilgrimage) is not considered valid or sufficient without the fulfillment of essential conditions, most notably: Islam, maturity, and freedom. This is what the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) meant when he said: "Whoever among the young performs Hajj and then reaches the age of full responsibility, he must perform another Hajj…"
The term al-ḥinth refers to reaching the age of legal responsibility, at which a person is held accountable for his actions. If a young person performs Hajj before reaching this age, that Hajj does not suffice for the Hajj required by Islam, though it is counted as a voluntary act for which he is rewarded. Once he reaches the age of responsibility, he must perform another obligatory Hajj whenever he is able.
And regarding his statement, “Whoever among the Bedouins performs Hajj and then migrates…,” the meaning of ‘Bedouin’ here is one who performed Hajj before embracing Islam, and then converted and migrated from the land of disbelief to the land of Islam. He is then required to perform the Hajj of Islam, because Hajj performed in a state of disbelief is not accepted by consensus.
And regarding his statement, “And whoever is a slave and performs Hajj and then is freed…,” it means that if a slave performs Hajj while still in bondage, it does not suffice for the Hajj required by Islam, though it is counted as a voluntary act for which he is rewarded. Once he is freed, he is obliged to perform the Hajj of Islam whenever he is able.
The ruling in this matter is general and applies to both males and females. Males are mentioned primarily due to prevalence. Thus, if a female performs Hajj before reaching maturity, or if a female slave performs Hajj and is then freed, or if a female Bedouin performs Hajj and then embraces Islam, the ruling for them is the same as for males, for Islamic law makes no distinction between men and women in this regard.
