“Whoever removes a stone from the road will have a good deed recorded for him, and whoever has a good deed on his record will enter Paradise.”
Reported by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (no. 198) and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (no. 10660) from the narration of Muʿādh — may Allah be pleased with him — and similarly by Aḥmad (no. 27479).
Authenticated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ (no. 6265) and Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ṣaḥīḥah (no. 2306).
Brief Explanation of the Hadith
Among the deeds by which Allah multiplies good deeds and expiates sins are those whose benefit extends to others. Indeed, such deeds are among the best and greatest, for their reward continues to reach a person even after death. Among such deeds is what the Prophet — may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him — informed: that whoever removes a stone from the road, Allah records for him a good deed. And whoever has his good deed accepted and is granted success to act in a manner pleasing to Allah, that becomes a cause for his entry into Paradise—out of Allah’s bounty and His honoring of the people of obedience.
This ḥadīth shows that seemingly small deeds—often overlooked by many Muslims—can be a means of entering Paradise, especially when their benefit is widespread.
It also encourages the removal of harm from the path of the Muslims, and warns against placing it in their way, due to the harm and injury that such an act causes them.
