“A man saw in a dream that Laylat al-Qadr was on the night of the twenty-seventh. Hence, the Prophet — may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him — said: ‘I see that your dreams (coincide) regarding the last ten nights, so seek it during the odd nights among them.’”

Narrated by Muslim (No. 1165), from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both.

Brief Explanation of the Hadith

Among the favors of Allah, the Exalted, upon this Ummah is that He has appointed for it great seasons in which rewards are multiplied and sins are forgiven; and among the greatest of them is Laylat al-Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.
In this ḥadīth, Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that a man among the Companions saw in a dream that Laylat al-Qadr was on the night of the twenty-seventh. The Prophet — may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him — said: “I see that your dreams agree regarding the last ten nights,” meaning: I know that your visions have coincided in indicating that it is within the last ten nights of Ramaḍān. He then directed them to the time in which it is most hoped to occur, saying: “Seek it in the odd nights among them”; that is, seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten: the night of the twenty-first, the twenty-third, the twenty-fifth, the twenty-seventh, and the twenty-ninth, for these nights are more likely for it to occur.
The ḥadīth indicates that Laylat al-Qadr is not fixed to a specific night, for the Prophet — may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him — instructed that it be sought in the last ten nights in general, and more particularly in their odd nights.
It also indicates the significance of the righteous dream, as it may serve as a means of drawing attention to matters that are otherwise hidden.
